Bill Asher, founder of Asher Guitars & Lap Steels, celebrates 35 years in the guitar repair and building business. Asher finds that the boutique guitar building industry has grown more creative – and more challenging – over the years. With almost 1000 hand crafted guitars sold, he attributes his longevity in the business to his passion in collaborating with artists, and for his loyal clients – some who have been with him for 25 years.
Asher met Jackson Browne in the mid 1980s when Asher, then in his early 20’s, had recently purchased a small guitar repair shop in Los Angeles for $9,000 from his mentor Jeff Lunsford. Having already gained many years of experience in repair and restoration working under Lunsford, Browne’s trust in Asher grew as he began bringing him more and more guitar projects.
Through the years, Asher and Browne have collaborated on maintaining and upgrading hundreds of tour and studio guitars, ampifing acoustics for live use, and guitar building projects. Today, Browne is currently touring with his the Asher Electro Sonic and S-Custom models.
“I owe a lot to Jackson for my growth as a Luthier,” says Asher. “As an artist he is a perfectionist and demands the same work ethic from people he works with. I have had to push myself to learn and grow and maintain that high standard.”
Today, even though Asher has amassed an impressive list of high profile repair and guitar clients – including Fleetwood Mac, Dixie Chicks, Zac Brown Band, Paul Simon, and John Frusciante – Asher works out of a private repair and build shop with a small crew consisting of family. His wife Jessica runs the back end of the business while Asher remains on the bench creating, repairing and sharing ideas with his customers.
