LAPSED MUSICIANS ENCOURAGED TO ROCK AGAIN AS ‘WEEKEND WARRIORS’ ARRIVES IN LONDON
Ex and wannabe rock musicians in London are invited to the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in Kilburn, London to show their passion for rock music has lost none of its enthusiasm – nor its potential to fill local venues – as the Weekend Warriors programme hits London for the first time.
Weekend Warriors, brought to the UK from the US by the Music Industries Association (MIA), gives 35-60 years old lapsed musicians the unique opportunity to form a band, re-live their musical youth and fulfil their rock dreams! The Institute, an MIA member, will group enthusiasts into bands, and provide them with equipment, rehearsal space and mentors as they become London’s first Weekend Warriors. The bands will jam together, decide upon a set, rehearse and then perform in a concert to a live audience of family and friends in a fantastic local venue. Paul Kirkham, Director at the Institute, said: “This is fantastic news and we can’t wait to get Weekend Warriors underway. The Institute has been providing world class opportunities to musicians to develop their talent and indulge their passions for almost a quarter of a century, and we’re convinced there are many people across London who are desperate to fulfil an ambition to perform live in a band but have never had that opportunity. We’re going to help them get there.”

Friday 29th February – Gig at Bearsden Burgh Hall
REFLECTOR is supporting FOUR GOOD MEN at an 80’s charity gig at Bearsden Burgh Hall (Bearsden Cross) on the evening of Friday 29th February.
Four Good Men is a top band comprising two founding members of Simple Minds and musicians who have played with Wet Wet Wet, Robbie Williams Band, The Pretenders, H20 etc ………They toured the USA in 2007 and are giving up their time to raise money for charity at this gig. It promised to be quite a night (and a lot cheaper than paying to see them at the SECC…) Check out their clips on You Tube.
The evening is a charity fund raiser organised by Dr Des Spence of Maryhill Health Centre to raise money for teenagers with severe illnesses. Tickets are £15 each and there are prizes for the best 80s costume of the evening!
The boys in Reflector are delighted to be supporting this top band and we are kicking off the 80s themed evening by taking the crowd a wee bit further back to some classic 70s rock numbers (Stones, Free, T-Rex, Bad Company etc).
Doors open at 7:30 and Reflector are on at 8:00 sharp with Four Good Men coming on after the break. It promises to be quite a production.
What’s it really like to be a Weekend Warrior? Well take a look at these quotes from some of our Warriors which will give you an idea of how much fun can be had.
“The best musical experiences of our lives! A great way to learn how to play in a band situation and about much fun as you could have with your clothes on!”
Andy McDonald, Weekend Warrior, Harlow
“Playing live rock music is indeed one of the most uplifting experiences known to (older) man”
“Nothing I’ve done lately has been half as much fun.”
Both from Robert Sandall “Over the Hills” band ,Weekend Warriors
“I have to say it has all been extremely enjoyable…….We have decided to carry on as a band and our second gig is soon.”
Kevan Pigley, Band Three, Weekend Warriors

On 13th July 2006 the MIA won its second Trade Association Forum Award - the Commercial Initiative Award. These awards recognise best practice amongst trade associations and this award was given to the MIA for the Weekend Warrior scheme. The other finalists were the British Marine Federation and the National Association of Estate Agents. The judges recognised the proven appeal of the scheme and the investment the MIA had made in providing support to ensure the programmes success. They also recognised that the scheme was an excellent example of how to enlarge and refresh a market. With over 20 stores now running Weekend Warriors we expect over 500 Warriors to have completed a scheme by the end of the year. The MIA held a Weekend Warrior Retailers Day on Monday, 14th August, at Yamaha in Milton Keynes, for participating stores and those interested in the scheme. |
