Learn to Play Day 2019 – next weekend!

Alice here, with an update on one of my favourite events of the year – Learn to Play Day…

It’s been a fantastic lead up to the event, with a great range of shops, tuition groups/teachers, community organisations, orchestras and more holding events; there are currently 105 confirmed venues giving out FREE taster lessons all around the country – even more than last year!

There’s some excellent events going on all over the UK, here’s some of the highlights:

Both music store chains Musicroom and PMT are big supporters of Learn to Play Day and 2019 is no exception.

Over the years, thousands of free music lessons have taken place at PMT Stores, and this year they’re hoping to really push the boat out! In 2018, PMT provided 266 free guitar, bass, drum and piano lessons, and in 2019 they want to beat this. Every PMT Store will be getting on board – they’ll have some help from MIA member Rocksteady Music School, whose highly-trained team of musicians make learning music fun and give first-time musicians the chance be in a band playing their favourite songs.

9 Musicroom stores across the UK are getting involved, with activities such as Piano Adventures workshops, goodie bags and special offers. PLUS one of the UK’s most soulful singer-songwriters, Jodie Abacus, will be ‘live at Learn to Play Day’ at the Denmark Street branch in the new Casio showroom.

The mighty GAK in Brighton will also be holding an event, where Fender Specialists will be on-hand all day along with Unique Pop-Up  booths running Fender Play for the public to try!

Flagship store Yamaha Music London will yet again be running a fun family weekend event, and will throw open their doors and invite everyone – regardless of age or ability – to come in and make some noise!!!

Plenty of other shops and music brands around the country will be opening their doors, providing live music, special offers and welcoming the public in, including:
A Major Music, A. Hanna & Sons Pianos, Absolute Music, Brittens Music, Cookes Pianos, Core Music, Dawkes Music, Early Music Shop, East Coast Music, Fair Deal Music , Forsyth Brothers Limited, Hickies Music Store, Hogan Music, Holmes Music , J.G. Windows Ltd, KORG UK, Markson Pianos, Mikes music workshop, Millers Music, Music Store Pro, Pencerdd Music, Salisbury Drum Centre, Sax.co.uk, Sounds Great Music, Spider Music Ltd, Sutton Music Centre, Trevada Music, Vale Pianos and Westmount Music.

Community Organisations:

Learn to Play Day sees all kinds of organisations come together to show the public how making music can change their lives… This year we have:

Music Hubs & Music Services: Bucks Music Trust, Cornwall Music Service Trust, Croydon Music Hub, Gloucestershire Music, Horsham Music Centre and North East Music Foundation will all be giving out FREE taster lessons to celebrate LTPD.

Our friends at The Music Hub have even got the Band of the Grenadier Guards coming along!

Music Teaching Organisations: Teachers and music schools all over the country are getting involved with activities such as Music Production workshops, prize draws, live performances, guest musicians, and local celebrity appearances.

Bands: Let’s not forget our wonderful community orchestras and marching bands. This year we have 17 Tonbridge Scout & Guide Band, Garforth Brass Band, The Band of the Royal British Legion and Skipton Community Orchestra giving free lessons to locals and recruiting new members.

These are just a sample of the many, many nationwide musical extravaganzas planned for Learn to Play Day 2018.

We’ve also had some much appreciated support from our suppliers. Thank you!

There’s still time to be involved – please email alice@musicforall.org.uk with your ideas.

So, from Scotland to Cornwall, Wales to Norfolk, Learn to Play Day is a go – here’s to a great weekend of making more musicians!
