Here are a few words from MIA Member, Steven Greenall, Chief Executive of Warwick Music Group:
“At a time when clarity is distinctly lacking from our politicians with the inevitable and continuing Brexit paralysis, the industry is having to take control of the agenda and forge ahead. We are inundated with reports and research outlining the failure to adequately fund a comprehensive musical education for every child across the UK.
Despite the valiant efforts of Music Hubs, Teachers and Schools, just 8.8%* of children are making music at school.
Whereas the fight for more music education funding in schools continues (with concerted lobbying to the Department for Education from all of us involved in music education), the music industry needs to look at how it can support and grow access to music for the other 91% of children, plus the UK’s fastest growing population “the grey pound”.
In the typical business cycle, a market in turmoil also presents opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurial thinking which may well give traditional music retailers a local advantage over the global retailer behemoths.
The interest in music amongst consumers, young and old, has never been stronger – now the music industry needs to find new ways to connect to its audience and take advantage of its biggest opportunity yet!
This is why we are hosting this industry gathering. So, come along, hear from inspirational speakers and take away real, practical examples to help any of us wanting to get more involved (or wanting to start) in music education!”
