The team are also organising a celebratory get together (virtual of course given the current circumstances)…
The get together is for everybody across the three stores in Millers group, and they’re also inviting all who know Steve to join them at 12:30pm today (Friday 25th) for a celebration with a presentation and round of applause from all his colleagues. Steve Battle is celebrating 50 years at Norwich music store Cookes Pianos this month, an incredible achievement in any business but especially so in Retail today with much of the high street under so much strain. To many, his personality and presence is as integral to Cookes as the building it has occupied on St Benedicts since its founding in 1887.
Cookes showroom, like many other members, and their sister store Millers Music was closed in March with the lockdown. Cookes has continued to trade online, the team operating from kitchen tables and sofas. They quickly developed their website, adding booking systems, virtual consultations, and rental applications to provide all their services to customers in new ways, as they have done for the last 130 years.
Steve’s journey with Cookes started at the tender age of 17. With his former business partner Bill, they both worked in the business for many years before purchasing it in 1989 from Arthur Cooke, a descendent of the founder. Over 27 years they developed the business through rolling blackouts in the 1970’s and recessions eventually selling to Millers Music of Cambridge in 2016. Bill sadly passed away in 2016 but Steve remained in the business with his wife Joe, helping to transition Cookes to a new future.
Current owner Simon Pollard commented “We’re so proud to have Cookes Pianos as part of our group at Millers and to be able to celebrate this milestone with Steve and his family. There are very few people who will achieve this in their careers and I’m so pleased that we’re recognising Steve’s achievement but also supporting music across Norfolk”.
To celebrate this milestone, Cookes Pianos are preparing to give away a piano for every decade Steve has worked in the business, 5 in total worth over £5000. They will be donated to local institutions, organisations, or individuals who support or wish to support local music making, much of which has been hard hit by COVID-19.

Many congratulations and thanks to Steve from everyone at the MIA!
