MIA Member Faber Music and Sound and Music are pleased to announce a new partnership and the creation of ten Faber Music Bursaries, which will be made available to young composers and music creators to attend the Sound and Music Summer School in 2021.
Financial support from Faber Music has enabled the creation of ten Faber Music Bursaries, each of which will cover the full costs of a place for a young person who faces a barrier to taking part because of their family’s financial circumstances.
Both Sound and Music and Faber Music are committed to ensuring that young people from all backgrounds have more opportunities to learn composition and develop their skills, and these bursaries will support us in achieving this goal.
Now in its 13th year, the Sound and Music Summer School is the only, annual, residential course of its kind in the UK for young composers and music creators aged 14-18.
Each year 75 young people participate in a unique week working alongside professional composers and musicians, allowing them to explore new areas of musical creation, from composing for moving image to writing for the voice. Alumni have gone on to study at the country’s best conservatoires and received prestigious commissions, such as Lillie Harris and Ben Corrigan.
Applications open for the 2021 Summer School on Jan 12th.
Sam Wigglesworth, Director of Performance Music said: “Faber Music is proud to be supporting Sound and Music in their vital work of inspiring and enabling young people to create new music. Their brilliant Summer School is the foremost scheme of its kind in the UK, and our bursaries will ensure that this year it is more accessible than ever before.”
Judith Robinson, Head of Education at Sound and Music said: “The Sound and Music Summer School is a unique, creative and nurturing place where young composers and music creators come together to pursue their love of creativity. It is essential that anyone with the talent and commitment should be able to attend the week, regardless of their family’s ability to pay, so I am delighted that Faber Music is supporting young people’s music-making in this way. In these days of reduced budgets for music education, rising unemployment and increasing social inequalities, it is more important than ever that the next generation of composers and music creators are given the opportunity to develop their compositional skills, confidence and musical voices.”
Richard King, CEO of Faber Music added: “From our pioneering Waterman/Harewood piano tutors in the early 70s, and our long-standing relationship with Paul Harris, to recent projects with Lang Lang, education has always been a driving force and at the very heart of Faber Music. These Faber Music Bursaries will enable us to deepen this commitment to supporting the development of young musicians, and is the first part of a broader strategy aimed and championing diversity and accessibility across the sector.”
