Vox & Bonhams to showcase Rory Gallagher’s legendary Vox AC30

In a video shot at Bonhams, London, three Rory Gallagher fans and accomplished young blues guitarists in their own right play through Gallagher’s legendary amplifier. Zac Schulze, David Hawkins and Rhys Stygal play through a range of classic Rory Gallagher riffs and discuss what it’s like to play through such an iconic piece of gear.

“We are delighted to be able to work with Bonhams to capturing this incredible piece of rock and roll history on camera before it goes to auction,” said Ian House, Head of Marketing at Korg UK, Vox’s parent company. “It will be one very happy person who ends up with this amplifier, and we hope that whoever does has very forgiving and understanding neighbours, because it still makes a fearsome sound when it’s cranked up!”

The amp is a late ‘60s Top Boost AC30 fitted with 2x Crescendo speakers by Fane Acoustic. Bonhams have given the amplifier, which was purchased by Gallagher at Sound City, London, in 1970, an auction estimate of £4,000 – £6,000.

“Rory Gallagher had a deep connection with his Vox amps, particularly the AC30. It wasn’t just about the sheer volume for Rory — these amps allowed him to craft that perfect balance of warmth and power that defined his performances,” said Claire ToleMoir, Head of Popular Culture and Science at Bonhams. “Known for his raw, gritty tone, Rory relied on the dynamic range of the Vox amps to deliver everything from rich, clean sounds to the powerful overdrive that became a signature of his style.”

Incredibly, the legendary blues guitarist’s preferred settings are still captured on the control panel in permanent marker, guiding the way for the lucky high bidder to recreate Gallagher’s iconic tone.
