Who are the MIA?

We are UK trade body that represents the interests of UK businesses making and selling musical instruments.

Manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishers and those that offer supporting products or services come within our scope.

We work with Government Departments, Industry Bodies and Independent Regulatory Organisations across matters such as Commercial Practice, Export and Music Education

Our Vision:

To make Musical Instruments, Technology and Learning accessible to everyone in the UK.

Values for our industry:

  • Inspire current and future music creators and learners, nurturing them throughout their lifetime
  • Transform our businesses towards a commercially viable and sustainable future
  • Foster a culture of innovation and creativity across every aspect of our businesses
  • Embrace the opportunity to be reflective and representative of our diverse community
  • Provide flexible and inclusive workplaces for our people that encourage them to learn and develop, and support their physical health and mental well-being
  • Proactively engage with and serve our broad music community
  • Contribute to the economic and social well-being of the local communities within which we operate

Our Work

The work we do at the MIA pivots around three very specific aims, and we try to ensure at least one of these is at the core of each project or output.

Amplifying the Voice of the Sector

One of the main roles of any trade association is to understand the priorities of its members and create a network of relationships that allow it to lobby on their behalf. Not only do we talk directly with Government, we also work with partners such as the British Retail Consortium and the Creative Industries Federation to ensure the widest possible reach.

Bringing The Industry Together

It’s all about the people. We bring them together in two ways. First, we deliver a broad programme of events where individuals and companies debate, discuss, and network, from our annual conference to weekly virtual drop in sessions. Second, we foster community groups that bring colleagues from across the industry together around topics that they care most about.

Empower Through Knowledge

As the trade association, we are well placed to share relevant, educational content with all sectors of the MI industry. This content is grouped under the MIacademy and made available to members across multiple platforms to suit their needs. While some information is shared with the wider industry, much is gated so members gain the greatest benefit.
