On March 9, Music for All marked a significant milestone with a special event at the House of Lords, kindly hosted by The Lord Bichard KCB. The afternoon marked the start of the charity’s 30th anniversary year and offered a moment to reflect on three decades of transforming lives through music-making.
Bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, supporters and beneficiaries, the event highlighted the power of collective action and commitment to improving access to music making opportunities throughout the UK. Music for All has long championed this mission, supporting individuals, schools and communities through funding, instrument donations and opportunities to make music, benefiting thousands of people – awarding over £450,000 in the past five years alone.
Guests heard a though-provoking keynote from neuroscientist Dr Julia Jones, exploring the science behind music’s powerful effects on physical and mental wellbeing. This was complemented by insights into the charity’s measurable impact, underpinned by research led by volunteer consultant Matthew Kaley.
Powerful first-hand stories were heard from grantees Nigel Clegg, who shared the transformative effects of the Power of Music Fund within a care home setting for people living with dementia and their carers. A joyful performance from Middleton Primary School pupils showcased the transformation a small investment in music provision can have within education settings.
With Music for All Ambassadors including Angellica Bell, Cathy Newman, Gareth Malone, Kenza Blanka and Orphy Robinson MBE in attendance, the event highlighted the strength of collaboration across the UK’s music and cultural landscape.
As Music for All looks ahead to its next 30 years, they invite MIA members to get involved. If you can consider direct sponsorship, a collaborative partnership, or the donation of instruments and equipment to the charity, they are keen to hear from you.
